Microsoft have finally set a date for the release of Windows 8.1 - the much awaited update to Windows 8. October 17th is the date Microsoft have picked to roll out the update as per a company blog post. The update will only be available through Windows Update on the set date but will hit retail shelves a mere 24 hours later (i.e October 18th). All devices released after October 17th should also come with Windows 8.1 pre-installed.

Windows 8.1 will sport a wide variety of enhancements which include the return of the “start” button, Internet Explorer 11, customization features for the Metro UI start screen and a revamp of the Metro UI settings menu which will now cover all settings in the control panel. Microsoft are also touting their new universal search which brings users all related web and local results to search queries.

If you think October 17th is too far up the alley, you can grab the Windows 8.1 preview here and see if there really is as much to look forward to as Microsoft are claiming.
