It’s
still early days yet, but virtual reality is here to stay, and it’s quickly
gaining mindshare exponentially. At the Game Developers Conference in San
Francisco, project Morpheus, Sony’s new VR helmet for the PS4 console thrilled game
fanatics.
|
Morpheus operates in tandem with the PlayStation Camera for
tracking the player's orientation and movement. With a twist of a player's
head, for instance, the game world rotates to match that perspective in
real-time. Players can also use the system's optional motion controller, the
PlayStation Move, as an in-game object, such as a sword. When Move is in use,
the Morpheus system will track the movements of a player's hands and replicate
them in the game. A player's arm swings and thrusts translate into combat moves
when battling enemies in the game, for example. – TechNewsWorld reports.
Project
Morpheus is actually a blessing for the Oculus Rift. Sony’s headset is
exclusively for the PS4 console. PC gamers will need a headset of their very
own, and the Oculus Rift is primed to play that role. According to Sony, the
design specifications may change.
System Specs:
It offers a 90-degree field of view, with
a gyroscope and accelerometer.
The unit uses 3D audio technology.
It boasts an LCD screen measuring 5
inches with a 1920 x 1080 resolution.
For connectivity, USB and HDMI ports are
available.
“The
headset is comfortable, the demo software performed well, the stereoscopic
effect is seamless, and the head-tracking even works facing away from the
camera.”
claimed one of the
testing teams.
It’s
only a matter of time before it’s on the shelves of every major retailer. In
the very near future, it’s certain Microsoft, Nintendo
and other industry giants will jump into the market with various VR system
alternatives.
With
this prototype technology, there is the need for custom content created from
scratch. Oculus Rift team and Sony would be working with software developers to
produce as many compatible games before their products reach the shelves.
This is what some game enthusiasts have to say:
James Tolson:
i would consider buying a PS4 for
one of these, can you imagine playing say Alien Isolation with one of these, I’m
all exited thinking about it :-)
Sean Lumly:
My god YES! That seems like it would
be a perfect application for VR. In fact, any slower moving first person game
would probably work well with adequate controls. I don’t currently own a PS4,
but I’m going to buy this for sure.
