Speech Translation: Microsoft rivals Google!

Microsoft is pioneering a real-time speech translation technology that’s is really exciting. Imagine a world without language barriers. One can talk to anyone from any part of the world without the necessity of knowing the same language.
Last month, the inaugural Code Conference in California offered Microsoft the platform to demonstration the translator tech. Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella led the demo how the technology can be integrated into user products, the first of this being Skype. Reports say the Skype Translator will be available for Windows 8 by the end of the year.
This translator technology is not totally new; Microsoft researchers including Rick Rashid, have been working on finessing the technology and its product integration aspect for a while. According to the corporate vice president of Skype, Gurdeep Pall, a lot of research has been undertaken. "We've invested in speech recognition, automatic translation and machine learning technologies for more than a decade, and now they're emerging as important components in this more personal computing era...”

One can argue that the translation was not quite real time, although this can be attributed to the complex dynamics of every language. Nonetheless, it’s laudable. With a lot more R&D, we can get closer to the real deal. For rivals like Google Translate, this might cause a rave. However, the competition should drive the industry players to invest more in improving the service.
